The "Alone" Project
In "Irkanda I", with the stark, plaintive voice of the solitary violin, the great Australian composer, Peter Sculthorpe, painted a compelling picture of the landscape surrounding him. Sculthorpe was a key figure in establishing a profound connection between the spirit of the Australian outback and the voice of the single violin, and his solo work, "Alone" lends its title to this project.

Despite the expressive power of the single violin, the repertoire is limited, and that's no less the case when it comes to Australian music.

The goal of the "Alone" project is to commission and record a substantial set of new, short pieces for unaccompanied violin from some of Australia's most exciting composers. The single guideline for each composer is that their work should last between 4 and 7 minutes, so that within one CD we can present an array of colours and styles representing the depth of creative talent in Australia.

I'm delighted that the current list of participating composers includes Elena Kats-Chernin, David Chisholm, Caerwen Martin, Rohan Stevenson, Kate Neal, Lachlan Skipworth, George Palmer and Sally Whitwell.

I'll record this brand new repertoire alongside unaccompanied music by great Australian names including Peter Sculthorpe, Ross Edwards and Paul Stanhope

With the cooperation of some of our finest creative talent, this project will generate, in one united effort, a whole new repertoire for musicians to perform, and for audiences everywhere to enjoy, for generations to come.
